FDA Updates MQSA National Statistics for Mammography Facilities and Inspections
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, FDA, has updated its MQSA National Statistics, which present commonly requested national statistics regarding the Mammography Quality Standards Act, MQSA, program.
The FDA states that these statistics are updated on the first of each month.
Certification Statistics
According to the latest figures shown on the FDA page, as of 1 September 2026, there were 9,128 total certified facilities and 27,793 total accredited units.
The statistics also show 9,126 certified facilities with 2D digital units and 14,218 accredited 2D digital units.
For Digital Breast Tomosynthesis, DBT, the FDA reports 8,657 certified facilities with DBT units and 13,575 accredited DBT units.
FY 2026 Inspection Statistics
The FDA’s FY 2026 inspection statistics, as of 1 September 2026, report 8,027 facilities inspected and 23,986 total units at inspected facilities.
The page also reports that, among inspections, the highest noncompliance was:
Level 1 noncompliance: 1%;
Level 2 noncompliance: 15.5%;
No noncompliance: 83.4%.
Annual Mammography Procedures
The FDA reports 45,025,781 total annual mammography procedures as of 1 September 2026.
The page clarifies that this number is an aggregate of procedures performed annually as reported by facilities to their accreditation bodies at the time of re-accreditation, which takes place once every three years. The aggregate includes only numbers reported by MQSA-certified, non-Veterans Hospital Administration facilities and may not reflect the current number of procedures performed at those facilities.

The FDA explains that the 2D digital unit statistics include Full Field Digital Mammography and Computed Radiography Units.
